Turn Signal Math (by anonymous)
Two theories are possible to explain why people don't use turn signals. Unfortunately assumptions are made that they are used, but this is largely false. The use of a turn signal within 13 milliseconds of the turn is not considered "use", so nearly 90 % of the driving public doesn't use them. The first theory is that people are generally pretty sure you see them in their cars - after all, they are driving around in a multiple ton object, which from their seat looks quite impressive. Obviously if they are going to turn, you will see them turn, and the fact that they are turning is none of your business anyway. Considerations of gas economy, safe and efficient flow of traffic, or getting rear-ended at 30+ mph is not something they wish to dwell on. They are really pretty busy with their radio, their phone, and just thinking about how they will manage to pay this month's car payment. Heh! I'm turning here! The second theory is darker, more sinister. This allows that the use of turn signals is deemed unnecessary because the driver knows that everyone else is too stupid to know what to do with the information. They have seen that guy drive for 400 miles with his turn signal on, and never make a turn. They are quite sure that turn signals are meaningless and unneccessary. Since they are likely, in their minds, to be the only sentinent being anywhere near their vehicle, the use of turn signals is just a waste of valuable energy and resources. Besides, if they put the signal on, and then change their mind, they will potentially cause the profoundly stupid creatures on the street to become confused. Better just to move about amongst the pink blobs without confusing them with flashing lights. Unfortunately neither theory can be proven. Proof would involve continous monitoring equipment which would fail to operate because it would require the vehicle driver to turn it on via a switch, which would seldom, if ever, be thrown. There are two theories why the monitoring system would not likely be turned on..... |
