The Blame Game
Nobody's arguing that the massacre in Littleton, Colorado at Columbine High is not a terrible tragedy. And there's not much dispute that the two gunmen, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold were not quite rolling the ball down the right lane. There does though seem to be an overwhelming need to direct blame for their actions on someone or something. The accusations are targeted at everything from rockers to parents, from the NRA to Goth. We like to believe that everybody is good, and has a solid head screwed on to their shoulders, and if they do wrong, then it must be someone's fault. There has to be someone to point the finger at, for making this otherwise normal person act in such an inhuman way. Are we so full of ourselves as a society, that we can't allow and accept people to make their own decisions, however flawed they may be? And even if certain music or culture were to suggest ideas, it's still up to the individual to make their own choices. Take away that, and our defense of free thought is unfounded. I don't intend say that no part of the outside world contributed to the actions of Harris and Klebold. Clearly they, as the rest of us, observed the world around them, and interpreted it into the actions they carried out on Tuesday, April 20th. To point the finger at one aspect, or one person, is pure lunacy. At what point does someone attempt to blame the boys affinity for broccoli for their interest in high powered weaponry? The recently discovered suicide note alludes that they were working alone and wanted it to end this way. Why can't we believe them? Is it really more healthy to blame, than to just accept the horror and move on? I think not. |
